Culture Connections Camp: Fostering Identity, Wellness & Community
Oakland, CA - On Saturday, June 7, 2025, the Lindy Waters III Foundation hosted a transformative Culture Connections Camp at Think College Now in Oakland, CA, in partnership with the Intertribal Friendship House. The free, one-day event welcomed 6th–12th grade students for a day focused on cultural identity, wellness, and community building.
The camp featured mindfulness activities, Indigenous storytelling, and health and wellness workshops. Youth also engaged in hands-on crafts, including traditional basket weaving led by skilled artists, creating a tangible connection to Native heritage.
Basketball sessions led by Analyss Benally (Navajo), a former Division I athlete, emphasized confidence, teamwork, and leadership through sport. Students also explored tech careers during interactive workshops with Cisco, which highlighted the importance of Native representation in the digital world. Individually held College Prep sessions gave students a chance to talk through their academic goals and receive tailored guidance for life after high school.
This camp builds on the success of the Foundation’s inaugural Culture Connections Camp held in Fall 2024 in Norman, Oklahoma. That first gathering blended traditional games, creative expression, and mental wellness practices to support youth in a holistic way.
The Oakland camp was made possible thanks to the collective efforts of the Intertribal Friendship House and generous donors. As the Foundation looks to grow this series, it invites families, students, and community partners to stay connected and follow along for future events.
